Barbican: Panafrica in Rhythm

Panafrica in Rhythm, part of the Barbican’s Project a Black Planet, brought together an intergenerational network of Black British musicians in Barbican Hall, in partnership with The Oracle Collective.

Barbican Hall from the balcony: a full house below, the stage lit green, the screen behind the band glowing orange.
Barbican Hall on film, from the back of the stalls towards the red-lit stage.

The film

The night in under three minutes: the hall, the music and the people in the aisles.

  • On stage in a woven hat and white robes, a performer sings and plays a horn, a saxophonist in white beside him.

    Horn and voice

  • On the side of the stage, a man in a cap and cream jacket hugs a performer in white robes and beads.

    Side of stage

  • A young drummer plays a solo under green light, cymbals in the foreground.

  • At the mixing desk in the hall, three men stand together, one with his arm raised.

    At the desk

  • Audience members dance in the aisle of Barbican Hall as the rows around them stand.

    In the aisles

  • In the crowd, two friends embrace while others around them look on.
